The cover has gaps that let the grated cheese fall out in all directions. The cavity between the handles catches much of the cheese, causing it to drop on the table, your lap, etc.
As others have said, the material isn't strong. It bends. The handle is also a bit fat and slick, making it hard to get a good grip.
Also, I'm not sure if or how it dissembles for cleaning.

My wife and I bought one and were happy with it for a couple of months. The problem was, the product only lasted a couple of months. You need to use a bit of pressure to get a good grating but the cheap plastic doesn't allow for much pressure at all. If you buy this, be warned that the handle WILL break and you'll be stuck with a piece of trash. Buy the Zyliss or, better yet, find the highly rated grater made by Pedrini (they are hard to find). Often if you do an online search for Pedrini Rotary Grater, this hunk of plastic junk from KitchenAid is what comes up.

I really like my grater. I use it exclusively with bulk Romano cheese from Costco [much better and cheaper in the long run than Kraft!]. I put the cheese and the grater loaded with cheese in a bug Ziploc bag in the fridge at all times. I clean the grater out with every new block of cheese. I am very happy with the quality of the grater for my light use and even got my parents doing the same thing.
My boyfriend has the same grater and he I guess uses his more often or uses more pressure when he grates so after 1 year and half of use the bottom part of the handle near the rotary head is starting to break. he had the same problem with another brand breaking at the same point so I think it is more his problem and not a thing with kitchen aid since neither my parents nor I have had this problem and we all bought the graters at the same time.
